The activation of the stress response (sympathetic response) is a normal mechanism that we all need for survival. The problem lies when it is chronically over-active, due to one or more of the triggers mentioned above. Common symptoms of over-active stress response include the following:
- Frequent illness/infection [decreased immune response]
- IBS (bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea) [imbalanced microbiome & impaired digestive function]
- Fatigue, brain fog, cravings [dysregulated blood sugar]
- Insomnia [imbalanced hormones and neurotransmitters]
The mind-body connection is bi-directional and either form of stressor can negatively or positively impact the other. This is why a comprehensive holistic approach is warranted in order to get to root causes and establish appropriate interventions. While no one can completely avoid stress, we can managing stress by building resilience through how we think, eat, breath, move, and sleep.
